Dos and Don’ts with fever

The temperature of the body increases when it fights an illness such as a viral or a bacterial infection.

What not to do:

1. Bath the patient in cool or cold water.

2. Blow a fan directly onto the patient.

3. Do not give any medication containing aspirin

4. Add extra layers of clothing or wrap the patient warmly if he or she is shivering.

What To Do:

1. Cool the room.

2. If the patient is shivering, use a light blanket.

3. Offer the patient something cool to drink.

4. Remove excess garments and leave the patient in a light T-shirt or shorts.

5. Place the patient in a lukewarm bath and wet the head as well. You can sponge the body for about five minutes and re-check the temperature after 30 minutes.

6. Give medication as prescribed by the doctor.

TIPS

Immediately seek medical assistance

1. If the patient has a seizure.

2. If patient’s temperature is not setting, he or she is lethargic or is vomiting excessively.

4. If the patient gets a rash that is associated with the temperature.
