PANAJI: Canacona received one of the heaviest 24-hour rain spells for September on Thursday, recording 59mm.
While the rain activity has kept weakening after mid-July, it had thinned further in September, raising the deficit to 19% on Friday.
A trough from north interior Karnataka to Gulf of Mannar in the south – a welcome development after a long dry spell— now runs from eastcentral Arabian Sea, off the south Maharashtra coast to southwest Bay of Bengal.
“This system is intensifying the entire scenario and hence moisture incursion increased from Karnataka to Goa,” Rahul M, scientist, India meteorological department (IMD), said.
During the last 24 hours till Friday morning, Canacona recorded 59mm of rainfall, perhaps the highest during September this year. A rainfall of 65mm is heavy, but during September 59mm can be considered heavy, Rahul said.
All centres, barring
Mapusa and Pernem, recorded some quantum of rainfall. Sakhali recorded 19.6mm,
Quepem 7mm, Valpoi 6.4mm, Mormugao 4.8mm, Sanguem 2.5mm, Margao 2.4mm, Dabolim 2.2mm,
Panaji 1.1mm, Ponda 1mm and Old Goa 0.4mm.
With barely a couple of days for the monsoon to end, the seasonal total has crawled to 2,390.2mm (94.1 inches) while a total of 2,952.1mm (116.2 inches) is considered normal at this stage.
After a three-day dry spell, a state average rainfall of less than 1mm was recorded during the last 24 hours till Thursday and 4mm till Friday.
Thunderstorms are likely to continue for at least a weak. “It depends on the trough and how long it persists,” Rahul said.
