The MIM leader demands withdrawal of ordinance on triple talaq

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday night questioned how an outgoing Chief Justice of India can fix the date of hearing of the Babri Masjid case ahead of retirement.

Mr Owaisi, flanked by Muslim clergy and leaders from various organisations, was speaking at a public meeting to protest the instant triple talaq ordinance passed by the Centre.

‘Technically wrong’

“How can an outgoing Chief Justice give October 29 as a date? Technically, you should not do this. The new CJI will come in case of propriety issues. He will decide what bench it will go to. How can you, while leaving, announce the date, your Lordship, with respect I say this. When four judges, you remember, had held a press conference about the roster,” he said .

Mr Owaisi described the ordinance as unconstitutional, anti-woman and against justice and demanded its withdrawal. He admitted that dowry and instant triple talaq were a sin and urged people not to pronounce it.

He said that before marriage, father of the bride must include in the nikahnama that in case a man pronounces instant triple talaq, he should pay three or five times the meher (dowry).

Others speakers expressed displeasure on the decriminalisation of Sections 377 and 497 of the IPC.
