JAKARTA, Indonesia—Hundreds of people were killed by a powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, with disaster officials warning Saturday that the death toll could rise sharply.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the country’s national disaster agency, said 384 people were killed in the city of Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi province, after the 7.5-magnitude quake hit Friday evening.
