Women have emerged as the city’s best corporators in the Praja Foundation’s report card on the performance of Mumbai’s corporators, released on Friday.
The report has named Shiv Sena’s Kishori Pednekar, Congress’s Shweta Korgaokar and BJP’s Priti Satam as the top three corporators. Of the top 10 corporators, seven are from the Shiv Sena. In the bottom 10, four corporators are from the BJP, including Kesharben Patel. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen corporators Shahnawaz Shaikh and Gulnaz Qureshi figure at the bottom of the ranking.
Among political parties, Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena have been ranked first, second and third respectively based on their performance. The corporators were ranked based on their scores on three parameters: past records (educational qualification, criminal cases: 7 marks), present performance (attendance, number of questions raised, fund usage: 63 marks) and perception through citizens survey (30 marks).
Five marks were deducted for every FIR filed and each pending charge sheet. Fresh FIRs were filed against four corporators after they were elected. According to the report, 17% of the total number of corporators have criminal cases against them.
The report found out that last year the corporators totally asked 2,609 questions. The second-most number of questions dealt with naming or renaming public places. Only 18 questions were asked about corruption. More than 50% corporators asked less than 10 questions and 13 did not ask a single question.
Nitai Mehta, managing trustee of the foundation, said, “Mumbai is reeling under potholes, floods, tuberculosis deaths, corruption in the municipality. These issues need to be addressed very urgently. Instead, the records show a different picture when it comes to questions asked and the importance given to issues. Public representatives need to introspect on their performance.”
