Collingwood fans arrested as they leave the MCG

A number of Magpie supporters have been arrested only minutes after the final siren as they left the MCG.

It's believed some Magpie fans were marched out in handcuffs, while one man was seen being put in the back of a divvy van.

It is understood one Pies supporter was arrested for being drunk and disorderly outside Gate 2.  Others reportedly clashed with Eagles fans as they left the ground.

Heavily armed riot police, protective service officers and plain clothed police will be patrolling the CBD and nightspots in Collingwood and Richmond were footy fans are expected to go after the grand final.

Commander Tim Hansen from the North West Metro Region warned there would be a zero tolerance policy on alcohol-fuelled violence following a spate of violent assaults after football games in recent months.

"We're starting to see a growing number of assaults occurring out in public places after the event, so people are leaving the game, leaving with great intention, having a really good night or day then hitting the pubs or clubs and drinking too much," Commander Hansen said on Friday.

"We're starting to see a large number of assaults just filter through which is giving us concerns."

Commander Hansen warned police would also follow fans heading out for a drink after the game.

"We're going to have a really strong presence late into the morning Sunday, but there is an onus on fans and supporters," he said.

"That onus is to look after your mates. If you see a bit of angst ... step in, drag your mates away and get them home."

More to come.
