A day after a 28-year-old man was shot dead while trying to catch robbers in Anand Vihar, his family said that it was his birthday in six days.
He shared the special day with two of his siblings and the family had plans to celebrate it like every year.
Mohit Gautam, a driver in Jagriti Enclave, was shot dead by bike-borne robbers who snatched a bag containing over ₹8 lakh from one Surender around 8 p.m.
The victim’s father Raj Kumar (25), also a driver, said that his children Mohit, Shalu and Himani were all born on the same date — October 6 — in different years.
“As their birthdays were on the same date, we used to celebrate at home and invite all our relatives. This year also, we had planned the same but now everything is over,” he sobbed. Mohit was helpful and never interfered in public matters, his family said.
“He lost his life helping someone. It was not even his own money. The accused should be caught at the earliest,” the father demanded.
The family was also looking for a groom for Mohit’s younger sister Himani after his elder sister Shalu got married. “There were plans for Mohit’s marriage also but he said he wanted some more time,” Mr. Kumar said. DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said teams have got leads on the suspects. On Friday night, Surender collected cash from Dilshad Garden and reached his employer’s office when at least two-bike borne men snatched the bag from his hand and fled the spot. Following this, the accused got stuck in traffic near Jagriti Enclave entrance, the police said. Mohit heard the commotion and came to the victim’s rescue. He managed to disbalance the bike after which one of the accused fell on the road. Mohit allegedly started punching the accused who then asked his accomplice to shoot.
Died on the spot
The other accused shot in the direction of the victim and the bullet hit Mohit’s abdomen. He died on the spot while the accused fled the spot, the police added.
