Apollo launches centre to train cardiologists

more-in

Apollo Hospitals has launched a comprehensive training centre for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) to provide training to cardiologists from across the country.

Peter Andreka, chief of adult cardiology, Gottsegen Gyorgy, Hungarian Institute of Cardiology, who has implanted over 1,000 valves, would be instrumental along with his team, in helping the hospital structure the programme, according to a press release. TAVI, a procedure for treating patients with aortic stenosis, that was being performed for more than a decade in the west, was adopted in India in 2015. Very few centres perform this procedure, mainly due to lack of training.

‘Platform to discuss’

Suneeta Reddy, managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group, said the centre would serve as a platform to discuss, debate and educate doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions with newer therapies.

Apollo Hospitals is among the few centres in India, accredited to perform the MitraClip procedure for heart failure patients.

This new device, which is a tiny clip, has been proven to improve outcomes in these patients. Mathew Samuel, director of interventional cardiology and Sai Satish, senior interventional cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, will be initiating this therapy on the first few patients during November, the release said.
