On 30 September 1993, Maharashtra witnessed one of the deadliest earthquakes in its history. The natural disaster came to be known as the Latur earthquakes. Mainly affecting the Latur and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra, the 6.2 magnitude earthquake destroyed over 52 villages and claimed over 10,000 lives, injuring another 30,000. The tragedy saw several foreign and local law enforcement agencies coming together for large-scale relief operations. The disaster led to the formation of The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on 30 May 2005.
