It is aimed at ensuring rainwater collects in temple tank

To enable greater percolation of rainwater, Greater Chennai Corporation is carrying out repairs on a stormwater drain on TP Koil Street, Triplicane.

Before it got damaged, this stormwater drain would facilitate flow of rainwater into the Sri Parthasarathi Swamy Temple Tank through another stormwater drain on South Mada Street, which is part of the temple’s ingeniously-constructed rainwater-harvesting structure.

With the completion of this work, rainwater that used to run into a nearby canal via the damaged stormwater drain, will collect in the temple tank.

As this work is under way, traffic has been closed on South Mada Street. However, the closure will be only for a few days after which pedestrian and light vehicle movement will resume.

Srinivasa Young Men’s Association secretary R. Seshadri said that the stormwater drain on TP Koil Street had been constructed by the Association many years ago, but over the course of time, got damaged due to road cuts.

This drain that would run for a length of 40 metres would also prevent rainwater from entering homes and establishments on TP Koil Street, he added.

The repairs have been taken up with the support of Member of Parliament Vijayakumar and former Corporation counsellor P.S.Vasan.

The work is expected to be completed before the onset of the monsoon.

Already, the Association has drilled 10 pipes into the ground inside the tank to allow rainwater percolation.
