The residents of Viveswarnagar, Srirampura, and surrounding areas have complained of a foul smell emanating from the waste treatment plant at Vidyaranyapuram for the last three days and want the authorities to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Following complaints, local elected representatives, including newly elected councillors, S.A. Ramdas, MLA, and others visited the spot on Friday and it transpired that more than two truckloads of vegetable waste were being dumped at the place resulting in odour enveloping the nearby residential areas.
The MLA said the vegetable waste was being dumped for a week and was the main reason for the odour. “While we were conducting a spot inspection to ascertain the reason for the increase in odour, a truck load of hospital waste surreptitiously made its entry in a bid to dump the waste but the vehicle was seized,” he said.
Though CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor the entry and exit of vehicles, there were no records pertaining to the waste being dumped and the plant operators were directed to maintain the records. They have also been directed to ensure that only waste generated within the Mysuru City Corporation limits was received at the plant and not from adjoining gram panchayats.
