Expressing her displeasure over the verdict of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court holding that adultery was not a crime and striking off IPC section 497, A.P. Mahila Commission chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari has said that the judgment has affected the sensibilities of women.
“The SC judgment in a way encourages live-in relationships and makes it easier for estranged couples to get a divorce. It also casts a blot on the traditions of our ancient civilisation which has certain safeguards that protect the institution of marriage,’’ said Ms. Rajakumari.
While appreciating the apex court’s judgment on triple talak and the issue of allowing women into the Ayyappa temple, Ms. Rajakumari said that the SC judgment on adultery could lead to illicit relationships in the country.
