MUMBAI: A pregnant woman, who fell off a running train on Wednesday, could have suffered a worse fate had a quick thinking policewoman travelling in the same coach not come to her rescue.

Puja Jagtap, 23, suffered a tear to the right side of her face and had to be given around 22 stitches. The policewoman, Rupali Mejari, enlisted the help of a collegian to move Jagtap away from the path of an oncoming train. Jagtap's unborn child is safe, said doctors.

Jagtap is four months pregnant. "We tied the knot six months ago and are very excited about starting a family," her husband, Swapnil, said. "My wife works at a dress designer's office in Mahim. As we live in Goregaon, the fastest option for her to reach work is to take a train," he said.
