‘Police asked me to file rape case against Muslim friend’

MEERUT: A day after a video showing four cops beating and abusing a 20-year-old female nursing student inside a police van for “choosing a Muslim partner” went viral, the girl, who said she had gone to her friend’s place just to exchange class notes, told TOI, “While I was waiting at the police station for my family to arrive, cops forced me to file a rape case against my friend. They told me that they would let me walk free only if I listened to them. Later, the policemen gave the same advice to my family.”
Narrating her ordeal, the girl said that she was shocked and terrified when a group of men suddenly barged into her friend’s rented house in Jagriti Vihar. “They dragged him out of the house and locked the door from outside. Later police arrived and took my friend and me to the station in two separate vans. While we were on our way to the police station, a woman cop thrashed me even as another officer recorded a video of the incident. They also used filthy language to address me,” the girl said.

“Initially, my parents believed whatever they heard outside the police station. Later, however, when I told them what had happened, they showed faith in me and supported me. I don’t know why the cops behaved so badly with me and my friend. I hadn’t done anything wrong. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to visit a male friend’s place again,” the nursing student said.

Asked about police pressuring the girl to file a false rape case against her friend, Meerut SP (city) Ranvijay Singh said, “Both of them were handed over to their families after being brought to the police station. Nothing of this sort has come to my knowledge. Whether she was forced to file a case or not is a matter of investigation, which is currently underway. If at all she was forced, we will get to know very soon and will take the required action.”
