COIMBATORE: The Agro Climate Research Centre (ACRC) of the
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (
TNAU) has predicted favourable rainfall this
northeast monsoon across all districts of the state.
The centre has collected the average northeast monsoon rainfall data for 30 years and predicted the rainfall for the coming monsoon, from October to December, said researchers.
Head of the centre S Panneerselvam said the rainfall this northeast monsoon would be fairly good and would be distributed across the state, unlike last year when some districts had deficit rainfall.
“The monsoons would be favourable for farmers and would help in recharging ground water,” he said.
Paneerselvam said the centre had released the prediction as a support tool for farmers to decide on what crops to cultivate and how to prepare their fields. As the rainfall is predicted to be favourable, he said farmers can carry on with their cropping programmes.
The
forecast released by the centre said the rainfall would be almost in line with the recorded normal rainfall in all districts.
In the western zone, Coimbatore is predicted to receive 363mm rainfall against its normal 328m, Erode 370mm against its 314mm, while Tirupur is predicted to receive 281mm against its normal 314mm. The Nilgiris is predicted to receive 462mm as against its normal 476mm.
“If the districts are predicted to receive more rainfall, farmers can construct ponds to harvest the water and if there is excess rainfall, they can construct drain systems to let the water out to prevent submerging of crops,” he said.
Among other districts, Chennai is predicted to receive 767mm as against its normal 788mm, Cuddalore 667mm against its normal 696mm and Nagapattinam 924mm against its normal 937mm.
The forecast has 60% probability, says a release from the centre.
