MUMBAI: A woman pedestrian in her twenties sustained injuries from a tree branch that fell on her near Metro Cinema in south Mumbai when rain and strong winds took the city by surprise on Thursday evening.
Witness accounts received by the BMC said the woman was with a man and a woman when the incident occurred around 7.30 pm. The unconscious victim came to when people sprinkled water on her face. She and the other two with her left in a taxi.
The day had begun hot and sultry, and the rain accompanied by thunder and
lightning made a sudden appearance around 7 pm in various parts of the city. Officials from the
India Meteorological Department (IMD) termed it a typical September weather phenomenon. They said that these were localised systems which would not last long.
"This is typical weather, especially from the third week of September," said K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
