The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released the 2018 MCAS scores on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Students in the third to eighth grades took what is being referred to as the “Next-Generation MCAS.” The updated version of the MCAS was given for the first time in the spring to elementary and middle school students in the English/language arts and mathematics categories.

High school students are still taking the legacy MCAS tests. The next-generation tests will be introduced at the high school in spring 2019.

The score levels for the next-generation MCAS are different from those of the legacy MCAS.

Next-generation MCAS scores are: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations.

The legacy MCAS’ four categories are: Advanced, Proficient, Needs Improvement and Warning (grade 3 to 8) or Failure (high school).
