Compensation requests of 5,306 families to be processed

The field survey which was launched in the limits of various local bodies under the Rebuild Kerala initiative to assess rain-related damage was completed in the district on Thursday. Project coordinators said the compensation requests of 84% of the total applicants were approved on the basis of the survey report.

Based on the verified data, the Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) would proceed with the compensation requests of 5,306 families in Kozhikode district. Initially, there were 6,291 verified applications of which 985 were rejected in the final screening by the LSGD engineering wing.

Revenue Department officials said Kozhikode was the first district in Kerala to complete the field-level survey by deploying around 500 volunteers, including students from various educational institutions. As per the official report, houses of 314 families were destroyed in floods and multiple landslips. This was in addition to the 4,964 damaged buildings. The survey did not cover landslip-hit families at Karinchola in Kattippara panchayat as they were considered for a separate rehabilitation package. Panchayat authorities said the interim aid declared by the government had already been handed over to the shortlisted families in the region.

As per the final report, nine grama panchayats suffered huge losses in the recent floods. Post-flood crisis was huge at grama panchayats such as Olavanna and Mavoor, where around 350 buildings, including houses and shops, had been damaged. Karassery, Koorachundu, Kodenchery, Koodaranhi, Kavilumpara, Puthuppady and Thiruvambady were the other grama panchayats where the loss was high. Officials said the damage to commercial buildings and houses was also high in the limits of Kozhikode Corporation and Mukkom Municipality. More than 1,200 buildings had been hit by the natural calamities within the limits of Kozhikode Corporation and Mukkom Municipality alone.
