Supporters go on the rampage

The president of a faction of Indian National Trade Union Congress’s Himachal Pradesh unit, Hardeep Bawa, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by around a dozen people in Parwanoo on Thursday, the police said.

Mr. Bawa was seriously injured in the incident and referred to PGI, Chandigarh, after getting initial treatment at the local ESU hospital.

Tension in Parwanoo

Tension prevailed in the town following the attack as supporters of Mr. Bawa, who is also the president of Parwanoo Truck Union, damaged a few private vehicles parked on the roadside.

Mr. Bawa was assaulted in Sector 4 area of Parwanoo around 11 a.m. when he was on his way to his office. “Around 12-13 people allegedly assaulted Mr. Bawa with sharp-edged weapons, causing multiple injuries. A case has been registered and teams have been set up to find the accused. Raids are being conducted,” said Ajay Rana, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Parwanoo.

Police deployment

“The situation was tense in the town during the day, hence we deployed adequate number of police personnel to deal with any incident,” he added.

Mr. Rana said an FIR has been registered under Sections 307, 323, 341, 147, 149 and 506 of the India Penal code. The main accused, Pramod, is associated with a parallel truck union which operates in Parwanoo, the police added.
