Search giant Google is celebrating its 20th birthday with a cute doodle. The doodle features many ‘searches’ that have been made all through the years such as best dance moves, most popular sport in the world, is Pluto a planet? And, the search engine has all answers. On the eve of the search engine’s 20th anniversary, a question was doing the rounds, which was how the company got its name? Many might not know the answer, but here we tell you. While some believe that ‘Google’ is a spelling mistake, other believe that it is a smaller version of ‘googols’ which is said to be the first name which was considered.
According to one author, Google is probably a spelling error by a close associate of Larry Page, co-founder of the search engine. Back in 1996, Page was looking for a name that would represent, massive data with a graduate student, Sean Anderson who then suggested ‘googolplex’. For this, the page responded saying ‘googol’. Googol refers to a large number of 10 to the power of 100. However, Anderson made a spelling error from ‘googol’ to google’ but Page liked it and the name got registered.
The other story says now Google, which was derived from ‘googol’ was first coined by a nephew of US mathematician Edward Kasner. As per some stories, Kasner once had asked Milton Sirotta, to come up with a name which represent for a very large number. And then Milton invented ‘googol’.
At present, Google is now available in more than 150 language in over 190 countries and has grown bigger over the years.
