KOLKATA: Amid mounting pressure from a section of traders in Bagri Market to re-open it, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to get the fire ravaged market building examined by a reputable structural engineer from IIT Roorkie.
Responding to an appeal from the KMC building department, the IIT Roorkie has agreed to send an expert in the field of structural engineering to Kolkata for an on the spot survey of Bagri Market.

The civic body had written to the institute last week after arriving at a consensus among the civic engineers that the KMC would need an expert structural engineer as part of a third-party inspection (other than the KMC and the traders) to give credibility to a structural survey of the market building.

“We had written to the IIT Roorkie authorities requesting them to give an opinion on the structural stability of the fire ravaged Bagri Market building. The renowned institute has responded to our appeal and has decided to send an expert structural engineer to Kolkata by the end of this week to examine the stability of the market building. We will accompany him to the building and await the report to be submitted by the IIT after the survey,” a KMC building department official said on Thursday.

According to the civic official, the KMC building department would take a call on demolition of any parts of the building strictly based on the report of the IIT Roorkie.
