All eyes on Dhoni

more-in

No other captain of any national cricket team has the clout in the administration of the game in his country which the captain of the Indian cricket team enjoys (‘Sport’ page, “The Dhoni question raises its head again”, September 26). This includes selection of the Indian cricket team in which the captain has the final say. Given the manner in which M.S. Dhoni is revered, he may not be dropped till he himself opts out. His progressive diminishing of reflexes which hampers his batting must not be lost sight of. His batting slot at any number is irrelevant as every slot is crucial in a limited overs game. The idea of pushing him up the order so that he would have enough time to settle down has also miserably failed. Selectors have been giving him a long rope in the hope that he can rediscover his past magic, which is unlikely to happen.
