Abandoned elderly being rehabilitated

Steps have been taken to rehabilitate seven of the over a dozen senior citizens found abandoned at the Government General Hospital, Kozhikode.

U.V. Jose, District Collector, said on Thursday that three of them would be sent to Home of Love, a rehabilitation centre at Vellimadukunnu, being run with the aid of the Social Justice Department. One person would be accommodated at the government centre for senior citizens. Another person with disabilities, a native of Karnataka, would be sent to the government centre for the disabled, Mayanadu, and one person at Kanivu Snehatheeram, Kappadu. Family members have agreed to take home another person who is fit for discharge.

Legal action

District Legal Services Authority Secretary M.P. Jayaraj and District Social Justice Officer Aneeta Eslin said the remaining people would be rehabilitated as soon as the District Medical Officer certifies that they were fit to be discharged. Mr. Jose said that the district administration had taken legal action against those who refused to take home their relatives.
