AU Geography department's alumni lend a helping hand

ALLAHABAD: A group of alumni of MA 1994 batch of the department of Geography, 'The Metamorphosed-94' held an event at the department, on Tuesday. The group felicitated the meritorious students of the department along with two of the former head of the department, Prof Savindra Singh and Prof H N Mishra.

The district magistrate of Saharanpur, Alok Pandey, who is also the former student of the department, was also honoured by the group.

The group of alumni, comprising of a dozen students of the 1994 batch, have formed the group with the aim of promoting academic activities on the department. The group would also promote the meritorious students of the department by honouring them with scholarship and trophies.

In their maiden event, attended by Rajiv, Neel, Satyendra, Barnali, Ranjana and Neel of the group, felicitated five students of the MA final semester who have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) despite the fact that they have yet not completed their postgraduate degree.

The students included Sujet Patel, Krishna Kumar Mishra, Ashish Pratap Singh, Virendra Yadav and Swati Singh Visen.

In his address to the students, former HoD and an eminent figure in the field of Geography across the country, Prof Savindra Singh remembered the days with the batch when he was heading the department. He blessed the students attending the event in a fully packed hall and said that they should try to gather as much knowledge as possible from the teachers.

Prof H N Mishra, in his speech inspired the students and said that the effort of the alumni group is really commendable and he would like that it expands, both in terms of its activities as well as the participants that would be helped by the group over the years.

Speaking at the event, Alok Pandey, DM Shaharpur who has also hogged the limelight for setting two records in the Guinness Book of records, said that qualifying Civil Services is easy for any student provided he is committed for it. "Don't desire, but instead commit yourself for the goal and strengthen your observation skills which would make you smarter and sharpen your skills", he said.

The officer, who had cracked IAS in his first attempt, also held an interactive session with the students attending the class of Anupam Pandey, the associate professor of the department who runs special class for AU students and the same is attended by non-geographic students too.
