Safety of children was not just the responsibility of the police force but that of the society as a whole, said Greater Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan, on Tuesday.

Chennai:
Speaking at a documentary screening event at the Madras University, the Commissioner cited a few cases he had personally handled to explain that once a child is subjected to sexual abuse or violence, it would affect them in different ways.
“The society should support the victims of sexual abuse. Now, more number of cases are being re-ported thanks to the increase awareness and sensitivity in handling such cases. However, it could well be only a few percentage of actual crime committed,” he said.
The Commissioner also said that human rights activists who argue in support of the accused in such cases should also ponder over the victim’s rights having been violated. “If the accused in child sexual abuse cases are given a chance if they repent the crime, there would be thousands of such accused standing in the queue claiming that they repent about what they committed,” he said.
