Suspected her of having an affair; told police he tried to kill himself afterwards

After allegedly killing his wife with an LPG cylinder, a 26-year-old man called the police control room and confessed to the murder in north-west Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar on Tuesday morning.

Sunil Sharma has been arrested, the police said. They received a call at 2.30 a.m. regarding a woman lying in a pool of blood at her in-law’s house.

A team reached the spot and found the 24-year-old victim, Kavita Sharma. A bloodstained cylinder was found nearby. Sunil was then taken into custody, the police said.

The couple’s four-year-old daughter was sleeping with her grandmother in the adjacent room at the time of the incident, the police added.

“The couple lived in Swaroop Nagar, where Sunil owned a food stall. For the past few months, he suspected Kavita of having an affair with his friend. The couple fought over the issue on several occasions,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan.

A few days ago, the accused discovered that Kavita had a mobile phone he was unaware of. A neighbour told Sunil about his wife’s “intimacy” with one of his friends.

Sunil’s suspicion knew no bounds and he decided to kill her, the police said.

On Sunday, Sunil’s mother, who lives in Adarsh Nagar, went to her son’s house to counsel the couple. She took the couple and their daughter to her home.

Under alcohol influence

“Sunil was under the influence of alcohol. Around midnight, Kavita went to sleep but Sunil started watching TV. Around 1.30 a.m., he hit her on the head with an LPG cylinder kept in the room. He hit her thrice and she died on the spot,” added Ms. Khan.

He allegedly told the police that he later tried to kill himself with the same cylinder.

Sunil claimed he tried to electrocute himself too but was unsuccessful, the police said.

Following this, he called the police and informed them about the incident.

A first information report was registered at Adarsh Nagar police station, they added.
