CHENNAI: The Madras high court has installed disabled-friendly toilets replete with ramps and railings following a report in the Times of India highlighting the plight of people with disabilities visiting the court.

In a report published on September 20, TOI had highlighted issues disabled persons face when at the court. Some said they avoided having food or water to stop themselves from needing to use the restroom.

“It has been a long battle for us.

We had tried for so long to get accessible toilets across Tamil Nadu but only now, we have been provided with toilets at the court, which is a beginning. It is a win for all of us,” said Muruganantham, a public interest litigant on disability rights. The government should ensure accessibility in all the buildings across the state, he added.

The news of accessible toilets on court premises brought cheer to several people who had earlier highlighted the issue but never found a solution.

TMN Deepak, an activist with the December 3 movement, told TOI that it was great news that the court took cognizance of the news report and provided accessible toilets at the earliest.
