Two sisters from Seelampur, who were reported missing, were found dead in a canal in Alipur on Sunday, the police said on Tuesday.
They were identified on Monday and a case was registered on Tuesday after preliminary enquiry, they said. Nabila (20) and Rukhsar (22) had gone missing on September 19, the family said.
“They left the house in the afternoon after Rukhsar received a call regarding a job. They said they were going to Kashmere Gate but did not return,” said their father Mohd Ahmad.
The family approached the police the same night but were allegedly told to wait for 24 hours.
On September 21, a missing report was lodged and the police started looking for the victims.
On Sunday, they found the sisters. “One of them had ‘Lucky’ tattooed on the arm. The bodies were completely decomposed,” the police said.
Following this, the parents were called for identification on Monday. They allegedly told the police that Lucky is Rukhsar’s husband, whom she married a year-and-a-half-ago. The couple has a daughter.
‘Suspect’ absconding
The family suspects the involvement of Lucky and his family in the deaths.
“Rukhsar had been living with us for the past few months as she had frequent fights with her husband. Lucky used to come to our house often and force her to go back with him,” the father alleged.
Lucky is absconding, the police said.
A magisterial enquiry has been ordered and the preliminary report said that a case should be registered, said sources.
“A case under Sections 304B [where the death of a woman is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances within seven years of her marriage] and 302 [punishment for murder] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and case is being investigated from all angles,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Atul Thakur said.
The post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday. The preliminary report states that no external injuries were found and sexual assault has also been ruled out so far, said sources.
The viscera has been preserved to ascertain if the women were poisoned.
“For investigation, Rukhsar’s in-laws are being questioned,” said a senior police officer.
