THE BEER NUT: Five Mass. breweries win medals at the GABF

Five Massachusetts breweries - Brewery Silvaticus, Cambridge Brewing Company, Castle Island Brewing Company, Jack's Abby Craft Lagers and Wormtown Brewery - won medals at the GABF in Colorado.

Several Massachusetts breweries took home medals this week from the largest beer competition in the country.

In all, Massachusetts breweries won four silver and one bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver Saturday.

It was the 32nd competition at the GABF, which was founded in 1982, and the event was sponsored by the Brewers Association, the trade group for the craft beer industry. In all, more than 2,400 breweries entered nearly 8,500 beers into the competition, and more than 300 medals were awarded.

Brewery Silvaticus of Amesbury won a silver medal for Brevity, which was entered in the American-style sour ale category. Cambridge Brewing Company also won a silver for Death and the Maiden in the Baltic-style porter category. Castle Island Brewing Company of Norwood took home a silver medal for its American Lager in the American-style lager category.

Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, of Framingham, took home a bronze in the helles style lager category for its House Lager.

Finally, Worcester’s Wormtown Brewery’s Pro-Pro Porter, a collaboration with Medusa Brewing Company of Hudson, won a silver in the smoked beer category. Wormtown and Medusa’s head brewer/co-owner Keith Antul previously won a bronze medal for the original version of the beer, the Pro-Am Porter, when Antul was still an amateur brewer.

Will run for beer

In other beer news, Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers of Framingham is joining together with the United Way to host the Jack’s Abby United Way 5K Run or Walk.

The race will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 13. The event starts and finishes at the Jack’s Abby Beer Hall at 100 Clinton St.

The entry fee is $30, and all participants (21 and older) will receive one free beer. The first 200 people to register will receive a Jack’s Abby goodie bag, and the first 250 will receive a long-sleeved Jack’s Abby shirt. To enter, visit https://www.uwotc.org/5k?utm_source=Jack.

MetroWest Beer Fest in Ashland

Also on Oct. 13, the Ashland Sporting Association and Ashland VFW Post 2331 will team up to host the MetroWest Beer Fest at the VFW, 311 Pleasant St., Ashland.

Proceeds from the event, from 6 to 10 p.m., will go toward renovations to the VFW post.

The event will feature a cornhole tournament with prize money, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

Several breweries will be on hand pouring beers, including Altruist Brewing Company of Sturbridge, Barrel House Z of Weymouth, Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company of Framingham and Start Line Brewing Company of Hopkinton. Complementary beer samples are included in the price of a ticket, and there will be a cash bar.

Several food trucks will be on site selling food, and there will be live music.
