Dept. confident of completing remaining work on time

The State government has accorded administrative sanction for emergency road renovation works at an estimated ₹25 crore, covering all the 13 Assembly constituencies in the district.

Tenders will be floated soon to complete the finalised works with the fresh allocation.

Public Works Department officials said it was the second instalment sanctioned by the government within a short interval for managing the cost of emergency road repair works and post-flood issues. About 80% of the work taken up using the first instalment of ₹9 crore was completed in the district, they said.

‘No labour shortage’

PWD Executive Engineer R. Sindhu said the Department would be able to complete the remaining work on time as there was no shortage of labour or raw materials. “We would be compelled to postpone the work only in case of extreme weather change and rain during the construction phase,” she said.

Ms. Sindhu said equal consideration was given to all the Assembly constituencies in the selection of roads. Almost all emergency works proposed after the floods were attended to by the department, she added.

Meanwhile, complaints have been reported from various constituencies over the delayed execution of various road renovation projects previously taken up by the PWD’s National Highways division. Some of the local action councils have taken up the issue with the Kerala Road Safety Authority.
