PUNE: The police failed to prevent a large number of Ganesh mandals, including those in Shivajinagar and Swargate police colonies, from flouting the Bombay high court’s ban on the use of Dolby music systems and DJ music during the immersion procession from when it started on Sunday morning till it wound up on Monday around 1pm.

The Pune police, however, registered 75 cases against different Ganesh mandals and seized sound amplifiers and other high frequency loud speakers in 33 of these cases. More action against more errant mandals will follow, they said. In Pimpri Chinchwad, the police filed 80 cases for noise level violations.

Cases were filed against the mandals’ office-bearers and music system operators under the provisions of Indian Environment Act read with Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 and provisions of Maharashtra Police Act were invoked. The law prescribes punishment of imprisonment of up to five years and fine of up to Rs 1lakh.
