First-Ever Production BMW 8-Series Coupe Caught Out In The Open

In a supercar-rich environment like Monaco, one might think that a BMW could fly under the radar.

However, car spotters were vigilant and caught the brand new 8-Series Coupe cruising through the streets of the Principality earlier this month.

The car in question is an M850i, which is powered by a 538 PS (523 hp / 390 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that are channeled to the xDrive AWD system through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The automaker claims the M850i xDrive goes from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, or 1.2 seconds faster than the other model currently available, the 840d xDrive. The diesel has to make do with only 320 PS (315 hp / 235 kW) and 680 Nm (580 lb-ft) of torque from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit.

Since BMW hasn’t opened the order books for the 8-Series Coupe yet, this is likely either a press or a dealer car that ended up in Monaco for marketing purposes or some event.

When it goes on sale in November, the M850i xDrive will burn a €125,700 ($147,771) hole in your pockets, whereas the 840d xDrive oil burner will start from €100,000 ($111,559). Both prices are for the German market, whereas in the US, the gasoline-powered model will start from $112,958 (€96,075), including the $995 (€846) destination and handling fee, and will arrive in showrooms at the beginning of December.
