Action against nun withdrawn

A meeting of the parish council of the Karakkamala church under the Syro-Malabar diocese, Mananthavady, on Monday decided to withdraw all actions against Sister Lucy Kalappura, a nun who had joined the protest outside the High Court demanding the arrest of rape-accused bishop Franco Mulakkal.

Sister Lucy Kalappura of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation under the Karakkamala church was reportedly banned from church activities such as teaching the Bible, attending worship service and other activities of the parish, including offering holy communion.

Though she had not received a written notice, the Mother Superior of the convent had informed her about the restrictions orally as per the direction of the priest of the Karakkamala church.

Earlier, Stephan Kottakkal, priest of the Karakkamala church, had said in a release that the parishioners’ view of the protest was different from the nun’s and the church had brought this to the notice of the nun through the Mother Superior.

On Monday, a group of parishioners barged into the council meeting and demanded that the actions taken against the nun be withdrawn. They said the nun had not committed anything wrong and claimed that most of the parishioners supported their view. Later the priest told them that all actions against the nun were dismissed.

‘Justice won’

Sister Lucy expressed her sincere thanks to the parishioners and media for supporting her. She told mediapersons that finally justice had won with the support of the faithful.

“It is a proud moment in my life as a nun. It will give courage to the Christian community to protest against any injustice in the church,” she said.
