NIT Goa to shift to new premises in 2 years’ time

The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa will shift to its new premises in the Cuncolim village in two years’ time, with the intake capacity of the technical institute soon to be raised to 600, out of which 200 to 300 seats would be reserved for Goans.

Coming out with this information, the director of NIT, Goa Prof Gopal Mugeraya said that the second phase for the new NIT, Goa campus will have provision for a Kendriya Vidyalaya, which will admit the children of the institution faculty as well as students from the neighbourhood villages.

The NIT, Goa director was speaking at a press conference convened to inform about the 4th convention of the institute to be held on September 28, at Kala Academy, in the presence of the Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu and the Governor Mridula Sinha,

“The convocation ceremony will witness awarding of B Tech, M Tech and Ph D degrees to a total number of 133 students,” he added.

Speaking further, the NIT, Goa director said that the land for the construction of the new institution premises has already been handed over as also an amount of Rs 497 crores sanctioned.  “The buildings of the NIT, Goa will be constructed on 53 acres of land, while a hillock spread over 12 acres of land would be used to set up a solar powered plant, which will initially produce 6 MW of electricity, excess of which could be given to a grid on payment,” he informed, pointing out that the cost of the solar powered plant is already included in the cost of the campus project.

Speaking further Prof Mugeraya said that the 6-storied building in the new campus would be of miller-make, without pillars and plastering.

He also informed that the 1,000 capacity hostel for students would use all gradient of the laterite wall, adding that furthermore a dedicated teachers’ block would be provided.

It was further informed that a sports complex, a guest house and a small hospital would be included in the new NIT, Goa campus.

Answering to a question Prof Mugeraya said that the NIT, Goa is also training the science and maths school teachers, so that they can teach their students with focus on successfully clearing the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEEs).

Replying to another question, the NIT, Goa director said that the institution will not add anymore branches of engineering to its existing ones – Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering –  for the undergraduate courses, as other engineering courses don’t provide strong basics.

“I am however keen to start M Tech course in construction sponsored by the construction companies,” he concluded.
