Tirupur: After six people sustained injuries in a fire accident at a spinning mill in Bommanallur, the Tirupur rural police registered a case against the
manager and a supervisor of the mill on Monday for neglecting the safety of the employees.
The private cotton spinning mill employs about 350 labourers. “On Sunday night, when a group of labourers were at work, the fire suddenly started in the blow room of the mill,” said a police officer.
“Cotton that was being processed in a machine could have caught fire,” said a fire and rescue services personnel from Dharampuram, whose team put out the fire after two hours of struggle. “Some workers tried to remove cotton from the machine, during which six of them suffered burn injuries. S Sembagavalli, 18, of Thanjavur, suffered 95% burn injuries and is critical at a private hospital in Coimbatore,” the police officer said.
The police said the mill had installed fire safety system and many of its employees participated in fire drills. “But there seems to be lack of safety measures deployed in the mill. So, the Alangiyam police booked blow room supervisor Sukumar and mill manager Venkatesh under sections including 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 of the IPC,” the officer added.
The five others injured in the incident are: M Kalimuthu, 24, of Dindigul; P Dharani of Pudukottai; K Atchaya of Nagapattinam; S Chinnathambi of Tirunelveli; and L Prakash of Madurai.
