Ayushman Bharat, the Centre’s flagship scheme also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), was launched in Indore district on Sunday without proper infrastructure and planning. The scheme was inaugurated by union minister of state for external affairs MJ Akbar at Government PC Sethi Hospital. Scheme’s effective implementation would be a tough task for health department, which lacks required infrastructure in government hospitals. Worse, private hospitals have not shown interest in implementing it.
Under Ayushman Bharat scheme, treatment for 1,350 types of diseases will be provided to beneficiaries. Against this, Indore’s government hospitals have capacity to provide treatment for 307 diseases, less than half of what is expected. Moreover, district hospital would be shifted to other premises as its new building has to be constructed. Chief medical and health officer Dr HN Nayak said 2.98 lakh families have been registered under Ayushman Bharat scheme on the basis of Socio Economic Caste Census-2011. The entitlement is decided on basis of deprivation criteria in census database. For urban areas, 11 occupational criteria will determine entitlement.
Bitten by mosquitoes, hit by Ayushman scheme
City is reeling under dengue menace as the number of patients suffering from the deadly vector-borne disease is on rise. To make it worse, district malaria officer Dr Dharmendra Jain has been appointed as nodal officer for Ayushman Bharat scheme. Dr Jain claimed that the data collection for scheme has been completed and department has reached 98 percent of beneficiaries in the district.
Only 7 pvt hospitals empanelled
Only seven private hospitals have benn empanelled for the scheme. Other hospitals have not shown interest in it. Those empanelled include Retina Speciality Centre, Laxmi Devi Memorial Eye Hospital, Life Care Hospital, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Science, Vinayaka Hospital, Rohit Eye Hospital and Rajas Eye Hospital.
Akbar lays dist hospital’s foundation stone
Union minister of state MJ Akbar laid the foundation stone for district hospital’s three-storeyed building on Sunday. The Y-shaped hospital will have 300 beds.

Who are the beneficiaries?
Along with those falling under deprivation of Socio-Economic Caste Census-2011, beneficiaries of Mukhyamantri Sambal Yojana and those covered by State Illness Assistance Fund will also benefit under Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Medical teachers say no to scheme
To implement Ayushman Bharat successfully, state government has planned to ban private practice of government medical college teachers and asked them to work for scheme. But they don’t seem to be united on the issue.
