US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that he will use the current UN General Assembly meetings to confirm that sanctions on North Korea will remain in effect until the country is denuclearized.
In an interview aired by Fox News on Sunday, Pompeo discussed the joint declaration signed by the leaders of the 2 Koreas last week. The document says the North is ready to dismantle the Nyongbyon nuclear facility if the US takes reciprocal actions.
Pompeo said the economic sanctions have caused North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to “come as far as he has come to date.”
He said the sanctions are the “driving force to achieve the outcome” the US administration is looking for.
Pompeo also said the UN Security Council will not reduce those sanctions until “final” denuclearization is achieved.
He plans to take up the sanctions at a ministerial-level UN Security Council session that he will chair on Thursday.
