Mob had surrounded the vehicle after it hit another; sped off with the victim clinging on to the bonnet

A 23-year-old man who was part of a procession going to the Yamuna to immerse a Ganesha idol was run over by a speeding cab on NH-24 near east Delhi’s Samaspur village on September 22, the police said on Sunday.

The police suspect that the driver of the car, which had hit another man earlier, was scared of a beating by the mob and sped off with Rahul Kushwah clinging on to the bonnet.

The victim was later run over by the car. A part-time chef, Rahul lived with his parents, wife and brothers in Pandav Nagar. His family said he left home around 8.30 p.m. on September 22 to join the procession.

On the way, the cab hit one of the men in the procession. There were nearly 40 people in the procession and they surrounded the vehicle, which had four persons inside.

Meanwhile, Rahul climbed on the cab’s bonnet.

“The driver accelerated the car while Rahul was still on top of the bonnet. While others stepped back, Rahul could not get down in time. The driver sped towards Mayur Vihar, with people hot on the heels of the cab,” said a police officer.

Rahul was found lying injured on the road about 3 km away. He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“We have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the IPC Section 304 and are scanning CCTV footage. The registration number provided by some passers-by is being be verified. The case is under investigation,” said DCP (East) Pankaj Kumar Singh.
