Annoyed with his employer for not compensating him “suitably” for foiling the robbery of ₹80 lakh, a man and his accomplice stole ₹70 lakh, the police said on Sunday.
The Crime Branch has arrested the employee, identified as Dhan Singh Bisht, and his accomplice Yakub Hasan. The Azadpur-based businessman had sent Bisht to collect payment of ₹70 lakh from a party on August 27. However, Bisht ran away with the money. A case was registered at Model Town police station.
On September 21, the Crime Branch received a tip-off about Hasan, who was also involved in the case. A team conducted a raid and Hasan was held. He revealed his involvement in the crime. The police recovered ₹1 lakh in cash and ₹3 lakh that was deposited in his account.
“At Hasan’s instance, Bisht was arrested from a rented accommodation in Burari and nearly ₹50 lakh was recovered,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajiv Ranjan.
He had bought a plot in Burari, rented a house there and furnished it lavishly.
“Bisht used to ferry large amounts in cash for his employer. He was attacked by robbers in 2015 but managed to escape. He had ₹80 lakh on his person. He sustained injuries in the neck and required 14 stitches. The businessman did not report the incident to the police. Bisht was expecting a good reward from his employer but only got a T-shirt,” said Mr. Ranjan. Bisht decided to teach his employer a lesson.
“He switched off his phone after stealing the money and hid in the house for several days. He visited his hometown in Almora and got a SIM card there,” said Mr. Ranjan.
