DETROIT – Sony Michel hoped for a better start to his NFL career.

The Patriots rookie running back got the bulk of the carries on Sunday and has had the bulk of the carries since making his debut in Week 2. It’s a good sign that the Patriots have put a lot of trust into their first rounder so early, but Michel’s first two games have resulted in losses.

“If you aren’t winning games, it’s not fun,” Michel said. “There’s nothing to make me feel good except for winning games. That’s the purpose, that’s the goal and that’s what we’re going to work towards.”

Michel’s been playing over Rex Burkhead, who suffered a neck injury on Sunday and was limited following a concussion in Jacksonville.

In his debut, against the Jags, Michel ran for 34 yards on 10 carries (3.4 yards per carry). On Sunday, he rushed for 50 yards on 14 carries (3.6 yards per carry). In the first half, the Patriots desperately tried to get the run game going, but it wasn't happening. Michel went into halftime averaging just 1.4 yards per carry (10 yards on seven carries). The back converted only one out of three attempts on third-and-1.

“We just played against a good defense. The line went out there and did their best,” Michel said. “Detroit had a good defense. They executed a little bit better than we did. We got to execute together as team.”

Michel played better in the second half averaging 5.7 yards per carry while gaining 40 yards on seven carries. He did have some tough moments in the receiving game, dropping a pass and says he needs to execute better.

In the second half, Michel looked like a viable options. He was closing to breaking a couple of runs, but it didn’t happen, so he remains unsatisfied.

“It’s football. It’ll be close, but at the end of the day, it didn’t happen. Close is not good enough,” Michel said.
