CHANDIGARH: Bringing respite to residents from a dry and hot week, heavy rains embraced the Tricity on Saturday.
A continuous downpour remained persistent throughout the day, however got weak in the evening. According to the Chandigarh Met department, rain and
thunderstorms are expected on Sunday and Monday too.
On Saturday, the downpour began early morning and continued till 5pm. After a couple of hours, it started again.
"The weather has changed suddenly. We were expecting such weather conditions for the last few. A cyclonic circulation floating in the Bay of Bengal had started moving towards the northern part of India. This has intersected with a
western disturbance and has resulted into heavy rains. Parts of Orissa and other states from that side have also received heavy rainfall.
"This would remain till Monday and is expected to be the last spell of the current monsoon season. As per our calculations, withdrawal of monsoon is expected to begin after September 24," said Surinder Paul, director of Chandigarh Met department.
A similar kind of downpour is expected on Sunday. Monday is expected to receive weaker rainfall compared to Saturday and Sunday.
"The rain started out heavily in the morning and remained persistent throughout the day. By 2:30pm, the city had already received about 61 mm of rain," Paul said.
Apart from increase in humidity levels, the maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22 degrees Celsius.
