How this P&O-style art deco home showcases its owners' collection

The home

A large 1930s art deco home that endured a Spanish Mission-style renovation in the '80s before the current owners gave it a thoroughly modern makeover last year.

Who lives here

Art consultant Sophie Vander, owner of online art gallery Curatorial+ Co., her husband David, an IT strategy consultant, and their four daughters, Imogen, 16, Saskia, 14, Estelle, 11, and Anaïs, 9.

What we did

"The house was so cold-looking, the floors were brown carpet and tile, and the tiny kitchen and dining room were hidden away," says Sophie. "We moved these spaces into the front of the house where they're now the nerve centre of family living."

Favourite room

"The dining room – it's really beautiful. I designed the table and I used to work at it before I got an office."

The 'hood

"The street is filled with liquidambar trees, and I love the bird life – the lorikeets, king parrots and rosellas."

Future plans

"We've just hired a designer to make over the garden."

"Art! Of course I'd say that. You don't have to spend a fortune to get original art, and then your home will be like nobody else's."
