KOLKATA: A day after West Bengal urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim inspected the Chingrighata flyover and said there were flaws in the flyover's design, the Kolkata traffic police closed entry of all heavy vehicles like buses and trucks on the flyover effective Saturday night.

Traffic sergeants continued monitoring vehicular movement on the flyover on Sunday as only light vehicles like cars and bikes were allowed to enter the right turn on Chingrighata flyover. Guard rails have been placed at the entry point of the flyover. Traffic police officers said that this restriction will continue till the flyover is repaired and the five member advisory committee gives it nod to withdraw the restriction. The KMDA authorities would also soon install height barriers at the entry point of the flyover.

Structural experts will give their opinion as to what could be done to rectify the defect of the flyover in consultation with KMDA. It would be checked whether an alternative design could be drawn set up for the flyover or whether additional pillars could be fixed in, officials said.
