Sister Lucy Kalappura, one of the nuns who had joined the protest outside the Kochi High Court demanding the arrest of rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal was allegedly barred from church activities and relieved of her duties.
Speaking to media persons at Mananthavady on Sunday, Sister Lucy said that she was yet receive any written notice on this, but Mother Superior of the Convent informed the restrictions orally as per the direction of the priest of the Karakkamala church.
When she returned to the convent on Sunday morning, she was informed that the church had banned her from church activities including teaching the Bible.
Meanwhile Stephan Kottakkal, priest of the Karakkamala church said in a release that the news was baseless as the diocese has yet to adopt any action against the nun.
It was only the opinion of the parishioners regarding the issue that was brought to the attention of the nun through the Mother Superior, Father Stephan said in the release.
Sister Lucy Kalappura of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation under the Karakkamala church of the Syro Malabar diocese, Mananthavady, in Wayanad district, was reportedly banned from teaching the Bible, attending worship service and other activities of the parish, including offering holy communion.
“I am not afraid of the action of the church, instead have accepted it happily on behalf of God,” said Sister Lucy, who was also a teacher of the Sacred Heart Higher secondary school at Dwaraka near Mananthavady.
Sister Lucy said she joined the protest to support her fellow nuns, and that she had not spoken against the Church.
