Chandigarh: Man to spend 10 days in jail for drinking in public

CHANDIGARH: A local court has sentenced a 23-year-old man to 10-day jail term for drinking in a public place and creating nuisance.
The court of civil judge Geetanjali Goel convicted Lalit Kumar, a resident of Kansal, under Section 68 (1) (B) of Punjab Police Act and 510 of the IPC. The court also fined him Rs 1,010 on him. Generally, in such cases, the offender is fined or made to stand till the rising of court or both.

Punjab and Haryana high court had recently directed Chandigarh Police to act tough on people drinking openly. A meeting between cops and district judges had taken place in which police had put a point to go strict on violators and give strict punishment so that such offenders have a fear of law, said sources.

It was on September 8 that the accused was caught drinking liquor on his motorcycle in the parking lot of Chandigarh Club at 8.50 pm. After recording statement of witness and completion of investigation, the challan against the accused was presented.

On the other hand, defence counsel argued no independent witness was joined in the investigation by despite availability. The counsel claimed the accused had been falsely implicated. The counsel had also submitted that the accused was liable to be acquitted after being benefit of doubt. After hearing the arguments, the court stated that prosecution has proved on record beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was found under the influence of alcohol and was creating disturbance at the public place.
