Party sceptical on 17 lakh new registrations in 10 days

The Telangana Congress has sought the details of new voters registered in the past 10 days in Telangana and asked the Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana to give them date-wise enrolment.

At a press conference here, Marri Shashidhar Reddy, who is heading the Election Commission Coordination Committee of Telangana Congress, said that 17 lakh voters submitted forms for inclusion in the voters list in the State in 10 days and such a demand was for the first time in the country.

He feared that the new enrolments may be bogus and said the party strongly feels that this was to help caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who has set targets for TRS leaders for new enrolments.

He also took objection to hiring of about 1,000 outsourced workers for an important work like voter verification.

“How can you make them accountable if they do something wrong,” he questioned.

Mr. Reddy also charged that focus was more on enrolments rather than cleaning the present list and moreover the revision period has been reduced to few weeks from four months. There are also reports of 500 votes registered from the same address in the old city and if the officers ignore such blatant mistakes people will lose confidence in the system, he said.
