MCG to rope in agencies to inspect rainwater pits

GURUGRAM: The MCG has sought proposals from agencies that can carry out the work of inspection of rainwater harvesting systems in all buildings within municipal limits.

The civic body also has to ensure, as per the Haryana Building code, that all buildings with more than 1,000 square meters of roof top has a water harvesting unit. Additionally, buildings with an area of more than 500 square meters must have a groundwater recharge system.

Further, the building plans cannot be approved by the civic body unless the property owners show the water harvesting unit.

Officials, however, said that many owners have built the systems just for namesake and that the harvesting units aren’t serving the purpose they should. “In many cases, people have just made a pipe and a pit. They take pictures and attached them to the approval file,” said N D Vashisht, chief engineer, MCG He added that the agency appointed might also be commissioned to carry out the repairs wherever needed.

The cost of all such work will be borne by the property owners. “We might give the agency some powers to advise the residents on the corrective measures and repairs. The same agency can be empaneled to carry out the works or another agency could be asked to do the same,” said Vashisht.
