Disgraced Smith, Warner score big on Oz comeback

2018-09-22 09:39

Cape Town - Disgraced former Australian skipper Steve Smith scored a patient 85 for Sutherland, while former vice-captain David Warner went on to bring up his century for Randwick-Petersham as the duo sparkled on return to grade cricket in Australia.

According to the ICC website, in his first match in his country following the ball-tampering saga, Smith scored a patient half-century at the Glenn McGrath Oval, before getting caught at mid-on off a leading edge on 85.

Meanwhile, David Warner scored a century for his side against St George at Coogee Oval. He celebrated the milestone with a trademark leap in the air.

Smith was playing for Sutherland against Mosman in the New South Wales Premier Cricket competition.

His participation attracted a crowd of more than 1000 spectators. They were treated to a fine display of batting by Smith, who laced his innings with six fours and a six.

Since the ball-tampering saga emerged in Cape Town in March, Smith and Warner have appeared in the Canada Global T20 League as well as the Caribbean Premier League, but this was their first game in Australia.

The duo was slapped with a 12-month suspension by Cricket Australia, which bars them from playing for Australia, the state teams and the Big Bash League teams, but they remain free to play outside of that.

The suspension is scheduled to end on March 28, which means they will miss out on the international home summer, but will hope to stay match-ready in light of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which starts on May 30 in England.
