UGC directs educational institutes to observe ‘Surgical Strike Day’

Pune: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all educational institutions to observe ‘Surgical Strike Day’ on September 29, marking its one year anniversary. It has asked to organise an array of events on the occasion at the institution.

The UGC had issued the circular on September 20. The circular includes few events that should be held which include a special parade and arrange a meet with ex-servicemen, who will sensitise students about the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces in protecting the borders. National Cadet Corps (NCC) Commander should address students on the modalities of protection of borders.

Students should pledge their support for the Armed Forces by writing letters and cards which can be produced in a physical or digital format at the respective institutes. These letters and cards can be shared with army officials visiting the college or can be sent to the nearest Cantonment. 

“It will be a good opportunity to spread awareness among students about Armed Forces and their works. It will encourage students to enrol in Armed Forces as well. It is necessary that students understand the scenario of what is happening at the borders as Indian citizens,” said Dilip Sheth, Principal of Sir Parashurambhau (SP) College.

While a few academicians have expressed that it won’t be as beneficial as expected. 

“Already, students don’t have an adequate amount of lectures as there is less number of lecturers/teachers available in colleges due to ban on appointment of professors. Similarly, out of these professors, few were not well qualified to teach the subjects, said Dadabhau Shinalkar, senate member.

“Therefore, instead of trying to ease the lectures in colleges, UGC is demanding to conduct such events,” Shinalkar, further added.
“Nevertheless, it will be a day of filling the attendance sheet of teachers and students. Ultimately, there will be no solid outcome of these events,” added Shinalkar.

However, Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar on Friday said in New Delhi that it is not mandatory for all educational institutions to follow the event, the ministry has only issued an advisory.

As a part of the day, a multimedia exhibition will be organised around India Gate on September 29 and it has suggested organising similar exhibitions which will be a public event in all state capitals/UTS and important towns and cantonments across the country. It has further suggested that all higher educational institutions can encourage their faculty and students to visit these exhibitions.
