Traffic along the National Highway 66 was diverted on Friday morning after an LPG-laden tanker belonging to Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) overturned at Panambra near Calicut University.

The accident is said to have taken place around 3.30 a.m.

People living in the region were put on high alert after the capsule started giving signs of gas leak. Personnel of the Fire and Rescue Services showered water on the tanker as part of preventing a possible blast.

Power supply to the area has been disconnected. No vehicle is allowed to go near the site of accident. People living in nearby houses have been evacuated.

The IOC officials have begun work to transfer the gas to a safe capsule. Police said it would take at least a few hours to plug the gas leak.
